DCC Justice Club

Members of the Omega Alpha Omicron Chapter (Justice Club) at Danville Community College are all smiles after winning several awards at the 2012 ACLA-LAE Region IV Conference held recently in Danville. DANVILLE, VA, December 7, 2012 – Omega Alpha Omicron Chapter, the Justice Club at Danville Community College, recently hosted the Fall 2012 American Criminal Justice Association – Lambda Alpha Epsilon (ACJA-LAE) Region IV conference. Ninety-three members from six states competed in events, such as criminal law, corrections, juvenile justice, police management, LAE knowledge, firearms, physical agility and crime scene.

Highlights of the conference included a presentation on "Gangs in Southside Virginia" by Danville Police Department Investigator Lee Perkins and a presentation on "Hazing", by Radford University professors Dr. Tod Burke and Dr. Steve Owen. John Wilt, DCC Associate Professor of Administration of Justice and club sponsor, served as the conference director.

DCC students won trophies in the Physical Agility and Crime Scene competition. They were: DeMars Wilson, second place (male 36 and over); Alex Jackson, second place (male 36 and over); Karen Joyner, second place (female 36 and over); Shirley Redd, third place (female 36 and over); and club sponsor John Wilt, first place (male 36 and over). In addition, Maureen Bernard took the third place Team Award (upper division).

The Omega Alpha Omicron chapter at DCC is very involved in campus and community activities. The club objectives are to improve criminal justice through educational activities; promote professional, academic, and public awareness of criminal justice issues; provide a unified voice for professionals in, and students of, criminal justice; promote high standards of ethical conduct, professional training, and higher education within the criminal justice field. The club recently co-sponsored a forum on the U.S. Bill of Rights for Constitution Day last September.

New members recently inducted into Omega Alpha Omicron include: Alex Jackson, Edward Archbold, Samuel Thompson, Corey Bethel, Timothy Wilborn, Jeremy Fowler, Karen Joyner, Freedom Jennings, Demetria Henry, Latish Chatten and Lakendra Davis. Chapter officers are: Jessica Burnett, President; Samuel Thompson, Vice President, Maureen Bernard, Treasurer; and Karen Joyner, Sgt-At-Arms.
