DANVILLE, VA, April 2, 2012 - “Leadership? will be theme of a discussion by Virginia Tech Head Football Coach Frank Beamer as a part of the 2012 Robert V. Shaver Lecture Series at Danville Community College on Tuesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. in the Student Center. The event is open to the public and offered free of charge. Limited seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Under Beamer (who came to Tech in 1987), Tech football has enjoyed unprecedented success with 19 consecutive bowl appearances, eight straight seasons of 10 wins or more, four ACC titles, five ACC Coastal Division crowns, three BIG EAST Conference titles, two BCS bowl victories and a trip to the national championship game. A native of Mt. Airy, N.C., Beamer also played for and is a graduate of Virginia Tech. He has served in coaching positions in Maryland, South Carolina, and Kentucky.

The lecture series is named in memory of Robert V. (Bob) Shaver, a long-time English professor, film buff and former DCC administrator. Shaver began his teaching career at the Danville Branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in September 1958, and he was among the faculty who assisted with the transition as Danville-VPI merged with Danville Technical Institute to form Danville Community College in 1968. In addition to serving as a Division Chair, Shaver also served as Interim Dean of Instruction and Student Development and as the college’s interim president during January and February 1992. Shaver was also responsible for the creation of many arts and humanities projects at the college, including the annual DCC Celebration of the Arts.
