DANVILLE, VA, April 12, 2012 – Using the theme, “Early Years Are Learning Years,? Danville Community College has planned several events to celebrate “Week of the Young Child?, April 21 – 27, 2012. The activities include a Community Resources Fair and an Open House at Families First Children’s Center on the DCC campus.

The celebration kicks off with the Third Annual Community Resources Fair, from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, April 21 on DCC’s athletic field. The fair features more than 20 exhibitors who will provide information, activities and door prizes to families and children attending the event. There will be games and activities for children, plus the Ice Cream Man will be selling frozen treats. In addition, DCC students will be available to answer questions about the Early Childhood Education program and to participate in the activities with the children. This event is free and open to the public.

On Monday April 23, an Open House will be held at Families First Children’s Center, located on the DCC campus. DCC’s Early Childhood Education students will distribute brochures and information about quality child care. The public is invited to stop by and visit this state-of-the-art facility.

Martha Tucker, Coordinator of DCC’s Early Childhood Education department said the celebration also recognizes the needs of young children and thanks educators and others involved in building better futures for all children. Week of the Young Child is celebrated across the country by hundreds of local organizations working to improve opportunities for all young children.

“Early learning experiences are crucial to the growth and development of young children,? Tucker added. “The DCC campus is so very fortunate to be able to provide quality child care for the children of students, faculty and community members through our on-campus laboratory school - Families First Children’s Center. We see ‘Week of the Young Child’ as an opportunity to give something back to the community.?

Danville Community College has more than 100 students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program and a very active student group, the TEACH Club. The students are working together to improve public support for high-quality early childhood education programs.
