DANVILLE, VA, October 5, 2011 - The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at Danville Community College has been awarded $230,000 by the U.S. Department of Education to continue its programming over the next five years.

The EOC is a non-profit program administered by DCC and funded by the U.S. Department of Education to serve participants in Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Patrick, and Pittsylvania counties, and the cities of Danville and Martinsville. The EOC was first established on the DCC campus in 2002, and has received funding each year since that time.

The purpose of the EOC is to provide assistance to individuals having a desire to enter or re-enter a program of post-secondary education. Education Specialists provide assistance with career decision making, admissions, and applying for financial aid. The goal is to help individuals enroll in GED programs, technical programs, or two or four-year colleges and universities. The office provides assistance not only to DCC students, but to students who desire to attend any college or university.

“The primary focus of EOC is to assist individuals ages 19 and older, low income students and first generation participants,? says Cathy Conner, Director of the EOC. “First generation students are those students whose parents do not have a bachelor’s degree.?

Conner adds that the EOC is mandated to serve at least 1,000 individuals each year, however, during the 2010-2011 academic year, the office served more than 1,400 students.

The Educational Opportunity Center's main office is located in the Wyatt Building, Room 109. Outreach sites are located at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (South Boston), Patrick Henry Community College (Martinsville), as well as in Stuart and Rocky Mount.
