DANVILLE, VA, October 5, 2011 - The
Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at Danville Community
College has been awarded $230,000 by the U.S. Department of
Education to continue its programming over the next five years.
The EOC is a non-profit program administered by DCC and funded
by the U.S. Department of Education to serve participants in
Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Patrick, and Pittsylvania counties,
and the cities of Danville and Martinsville. The EOC was first
established on the DCC campus in 2002, and has received funding
each year since that time.
The purpose of the EOC is to provide assistance to individuals
having a desire to enter or re-enter a program of post-secondary
education. Education Specialists provide assistance with career
decision making, admissions, and applying for financial aid. The
goal is to help individuals enroll in GED programs, technical
programs, or two or four-year colleges and universities. The
office provides assistance not only to DCC students, but to
students who desire to attend any college or university.
“The primary focus of EOC is to assist individuals ages 19 and
older, low income students and first generation participants,”
says Cathy Conner, Director of the EOC. “First generation

year, the office served more than 1,400 students.
The Educational Opportunity Center's main office is located in
the Wyatt Building, Room 109. Outreach sites are located at the
Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (South Boston),
Patrick Henry Community College (Martinsville), as well as in
