Danville Regional Medical Provides Scholarships to DCC Nursing Students

DANVILLE, VA. (June 8, 2011) – Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) will provide a total of 60 scholarships worth $500,000 over five years to Danville Community College’s (DCC) nursing program. The DRMC Scholar Awards will be awarded beginning in 2012.

“Education will play a vital role in rebuilding the economy of the Dan River region,? said Danville Regional Chief Executive Officer Eric Deaton. “The Virginia Health Reform Commission projects a shortage of approximately 22,600 nurses by 2020. Providing scholarships for students to pursue nursing degrees is one way Danville Regional can contribute. We are committed to this community and will continue to support nursing education.?

“Nurses are an integral part of our hospital, and we want to assist them with opportunities for continued education,? added Deaton. “We remain committed to providing our current and future associates with educational opportunities as we transition our nursing program to other local institutions of higher learning. DCC is one of the premier health education facilities in Virginia’s Community College System. We look forward to seeing this program grow and hiring those graduates to provide quality care to our area.?

The 60 scholarships will be available to those individuals seeking an Associate Degree in Nursing (RN). It will cover the cost of tuition and fees during each recipient’s two years in the program at DCC.

“Danville Community College values the past relationships we have had with DRMC,? said DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey. “We are excited about this new partnership, which will benefit the entire region.?

“We appreciate Danville Regional’s investment in future students who will be pursuing career opportunities in our nursing program,? added DCC Director of Development Shannon Hair.

Students can apply at the DCC Educational Foundation Office, Danville Regional Medical Center or online when applications become available in 2012. In addition to the DCC Scholarship committee, Danville Regional staff will play a pivotal role in the selection of the scholarship recipients. As a part of the scholarship program, each recipient is required to work two years as an RN at DRMC pending available employment.

DCC expanded its current nursing education curricula with a campus-based associate degree in Nursing (RN) program. For more than 50 years, Danville Community College, along with its predecessor institution (Danville Technical Institute), has trained more than 1,000 Practical Nurses (LPN program). The college also offers a career studies certificate for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), as well as an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Health Science with a specialization in Practical Nursing.

Danville Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Danville Community College nursing programs are in compliance with the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) and the Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON).

Danville Regional is the leading medical center in the Dan River Region of Virginia and North Carolina, providing open heart surgery, spinal surgery and advanced cancer treatment.
