ROGER RUIS HONORED FOR VOLUNTEER WORK AT DCC

Students Honor Roger Ruis

Second year students in Danville Community College’s Electrical/Electronics Technology program surprised Roger Ruis, left center, with a cake and gifts in recognition of the 1000 hours of volunteer service Ruis has given to the college and program.

DANVILLE, VA, December 16, 2011 - Roger Ruis, a retired Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. employee, was recently recognized for his outstanding volunteer service at Danville Community College. Ruis, who has put in more than 1,000 volunteer hours at the college, was recognized by the second year Electrical-Electronics program students in Associate Professor John Heinrich’s class.

Heinrich said Ruis assisted students in practical lab skills, theory and troubleshooting. For example, he fabricated a power distribution trainer to illustrate the electrical system from the power company generator to the light bulb in the home.

“When Roger (Ruis) saw that we did not have enough trainers for our large class size, he went to work fabricating and expanding trainers, providing materials from home, obtaining donations and specifying parts as needed,? Heinrich explained. “As a result of this effort, we have more than doubled the number of trainers available. In addition he has fabricated many new modules including PLCs (programmable logic controls) and the HMI interfaces for PLCs.?

The students and Heinrich recently surprised Ruis with a gift, plaque and a reception in his honor.

“We really appreciate his dedication and the valuable role he plays in building bright futures,’ Heinrich said. “It is through the positive efforts of people like Roger (Ruis) that we can change a lifetime for a student.?
