DANVILLE, VA, September 29, 2010 – Local and state educational, governmental and business leaders, along with hundreds of students, were on hand recently as Danville Community College dedicated its new Student Services Center. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was part of an event-filled day that started with the College’s Annual Convocation, a celebration of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Champion Baseball Team, and ended with a barbecue lunch for all in the Student Center. Photos from all of these events are available on the College’s Flickr web site. Click here for more photos.

Sixth Annual Convocation
Professor Emeritus and former Director of Student Development Peter A. Castiglione was the guest speaker at the Convocation. Also attending were Bruce J. Meyer, a State Board for Community Colleges member, along with former DCC President and VCCS Chancellor Dr. Arnold R. Oliver, now a professor at Eastern Shore Community College. Dr. Carlyle Ramsey, DCC President, and Dr. Chris Ezell, Vice President for Academic and Student Services, challenged students to be mindful of academic integrity as they pursue their studies. The Convocation is an annual tradition that brings together faculty, staff, administrators and students at the beginning of the school year.

Student Services Center Dedication
The ribbon-cutting ceremony represented the official opening of the $1.7 million Student Services Center. Located in the center of the DCC campus between the Learning Resources Center and the Engineering and Industrial Technology Building, the facility offers a place for students to receive food services, play games, fellowship with others, relax and/or study. The building, with 5,000 square feet of enclosed space and an additional 1,800 square feet of outdoor covered space, was constructed using private donations. Approximately $780,000 of that total was contributed by the Danville Kiwanis Foundation and Danville Lions Foundation. The remainder of the funding came from generous area residents and organizations. CJMW Architecture did the design work, and Blair Construction Co. was the contractor on the project.

The ceremony featured greetings and remarks from DCC Board Chair Mark Thackston, Nan Freed, Treasurer of the DCC Educational Foundation; Pete Castiglione, former Director of Student Development; John Hall, representing the Lions Foundation; Landon Wyatt, Jr., President of the Danville Kiwanis Foundation; Shannon Hair, President of the Alumni Association; and William T. “Tony? Thompson, President of the DCC Student Government Association. It was noted that planning for a centralized student center began in the 1970s. Castiglione said over the years, the project became a “mission? for himself and many other student groups, and “that mission has finally been realized.?
