Business Management

Shannon O. White

Shannon O. White chose Danville Community College because it is “local, more affordable, and offers classes that fit in my busy schedule.?

The almost one hour daily commute doesn’t bother her because she is accomplishing her educational goals through her major in Business Management.

She and husband, Sherman, live in Sutherlin (Halifax County), along with their four children: John Michael, Austin, Luke, and Laci. Together with her husband, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, they own and operate a family business, called White’s Construction Company.

“I chose my major because I have been involved in a family business for several years,? White says. “I love the business atmosphere and I knew majoring in business would help me in my career.?

She expects to receive her Associate of Applied Science Degree in the spring of 2011. White is a member of Alpha Beta Gamma, an international honor society established to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students in business curricula. She is considering continuing her education and majoring in accounting after her graduation.

Her children were actually the deciding factor that encouraged her to attend college. She says her husband attended DCC and majored in Auto Mechanics her children asked why she didn’t go to college.

“They (children) started asking me why I didn’t go (to college). It made me realize that I wanted to show them how important a college education is to a person,? she says. “I really hope one day they will look back at my accomplishments and be proud of all of the hard work I had to do to achieve my goals.?

Her biggest obstacles in attending college have been trying to fit in school between work and family. Along with her husband, other family members have helped out when schedules conflicted with each other.

“I am a mother and wife first and foremost,? White says acknowledging that her family is her first priority. “My children keep me on the go with their extracurricular activities so I have spent many late nights doing homework while everyone else is asleep.?

There are several staff member that White says encouraged her at DCC. She acknowledges all of her professors who have given her words of encouragement, including Wayne Martin Associate Professor of Business Management, who she says encouraged her to continue her college education.

“He (Martin) made me realize I have the potential to go further in my college education. His conversations with me proved that all of the hard work I have been doing is worth it. I have to make sacrifices when it comes to spending quality time with my family, but I know in the end I am making our lives better,? White explains. “ I may have regrets about that, but I am proud of what I have accomplished so far and I can only continue to work just as hard in the future. He is the reason I am seriously thinking of continuing on to a higher degree.?

White says she definitely encourages others to attend DCC.

“This college offers numerous degrees, transfer programs, etc. that is more affordable than many other colleges. The faculty here is great. I have had incredible teachers from whom I have learned a great deal of information. The class schedules really make a difference. Even the busiest schedules can be accommodated most of the time,? she adds.
