Dr. Henry Roediger,III

DANVILLE, VA, May 1, 2010 – Dr. Henry L. “Roddy? Roediger, III, internationally-recognized scholar of human memory function and the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, MO returns to the Danville area on May 13 for a workshop at Danville Community College. His workshop, “Applying Cognitive Psychology to Enhance Educational Practice,? will be held 8:30 a.m. – 12 noon in DCC’s Temple Building, Room 110 (Oliver Hall).

Formerly a Danvillian, Roediger attended Danville Public Schools before attending Riverside Military Academy. He graduated from Washington and Lee University, and earned his Ph.D. in psychology from Yale University. The publisher of numerous journal articles and books, Roediger has served as editor of two major psychology journals and is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Roediger’s research interests include topics such as how people can suffer memory illusions and false memories (remembering events differently from the way they happened or remembering events that never happened at all), implicit memory (when past events affect ongoing behavior without one’s awareness), and most recently, applying findings from cognitive psychology to improve learning in educational situations.

The DCC workshop will focus on the following questions:
• How can tests be used in the classroom to promote learning?
• Are there detrimental effects of giving multiple-choice tests?
• How does feedback help to enhance learning from tests?
• What has the greatest impact on learning – focused reading or testing?
• What impact does timing of feedback have on learning?

There is no cost to attend the workshop; however registration is required prior to May 10. For more information, and/or to register, contact Connie Richie, 434.797.6435; toll free: 800.560.4291, ext 6435; or click here.
