B.R. Ashby Jr., M.D.

DANVILLE, VA, May 1, 2009 -- B. R. Ashby Jr., M.D., a local physician and chair of the Danville Regional Foundation Board of Directors, will deliver the keynote address at Danville Community College’s commencement, scheduled Friday, May 15, at 7:00 p.m., at the Carrington Pavilion in Danville (629 Craghead St.). The graduation is being moved off the DCC campus this year because of the on-going building and renovation projects. The College is in the midst of completing construction of a $9.7 million health sciences facility and building new tennis courts and a $1.6 million student services center.

All fall and spring graduates and students who will complete their studies in the summer will participate. Associate degrees, diplomas and certificates will be awarded to more than 450 graduates. In addition, scholarship recipients who are continuing their education at four-year institutions will be recognized during the ceremony. Former State Senator Charles R. Hawkins also will be presented with an honorary Associate in Humane Letters Degree in recognition of his many contributions to Danville Community College. Hawkins recently retired after 26 years in the state legislature, including the last 16 years representing the 19th Senatorial District and 10 years prior to that in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Ashby is a native of Danville. He joined the Danville Regional Medical Center Board in 1988 as president of the medical staff after practicing psychiatry in the Danville area since 1971. In civic and educational activities, Ashby was the first chairman of the DCC Educational Foundation Board, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Virginia Medical School Foundation. A board member of the Future of the Piedmont Foundation, he has served on the boards of the United Way, Averett University, and Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. He also served as chairman of the Danville Regional Health System.

Because of his contributions locally and statewide, Ashby was honored as the Kiwanis Citizen of the Year in 2001. Governor Tim Kaine, in 2006, appointed Ashby to a four-year term on the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
