DCC PLANS WOMEN’S AWARENESS ACTIVITIES

DANVILLE, VA, March 9, 2009 – “Health and Fitness for Women? is the theme for a series of events planned at Danville Community College during the month of March. Activities include weekly exercise sessions, educational awareness, lectures and discussion groups, and the annual Green Tea.

The events will culminate with a lecture by Dr. Sherri Lawson Clark, a cultural anthropologist at Duke University’s Center for Social Demography and Ethnography, who will discuss, “Getting Unstuck?, on Tuesday, March 31, at 11 a.m., in Oliver Hall (Temple Building). Clark has extensive training in ethnographic and qualitative methods. Her primary research interests are centered around the effects of housing policy on the lives of low-income children and families. She is co-authoring a book, “Public Faces, Silent Crises: The Lives of Low-Income Mothers Transitioning in Rural Communities.?

Here is the schedule of events for the month:

Tuesday, March 10:
“Proper Stretching Exercises?, 11 a.m. – 12 noon, DCC Fitness Center, located in the Womack Building.

Thursday, March 12:
“Discussion/Demonstration: Relaxation through Massage?, led by Dora Hill, Certified Massage Therapist from Dora Hill Health Connections in Danville, 11a.m. – 12 noon, DCC Fitness Center, located in the Womack Building.

Tuesday, March 17:
“Academic Mommas?, a panel featuring DCC students and alumni who discuss the challenges of continuing their education while raising a family. The session will be moderated by Martha Tucker, DCC Assistant Professor of Early Childhood and Reading, 11 a.m., in Oliver Hall.

Wednesday, March 18:
“Fitness Wednesdays?, 12 – 1 p.m., DCC Fitness Center, located in the Womack Building.

Thursday, March 19:
Lecture/Discussion: Women in Non Traditional Careers?, led by Cathy Pulliam, Assistant Coordinator of Recruitment and Enrollment Management, 11 a.m., in Oliver Hall.

Friday, March 20:
“Green Tea? in the McGovern Gardens, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Join us for a refreshing libation and time of relaxation.

Tuesday, March 24:
“Domestic Violence?, a lecture and discussion, led by Petrina Carter, Executive Director of Doves, Inc., 11 a.m. – 12 noon, Oliver Hall.

Wednesday, March 25:
“Fitness Wednesdays?, 12 – 1 p.m., DCC Fitness Center, located in the Womack Building.

Tuesday, March 31:
“Lecture/Discussion: Getting Unstuck?, presented by Dr. Sherri Lawson Clark, 11 a.m. – 12 noon, Oliver Hall.
