Jacob Spencer

Twenty-year-old Jacob Spencer knows exactly what he wants for a career. It’s simple – for most of his life he has been planning for an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Cooling) career. The good news is he is finally on his way as he graduates in July 2009 with his Diploma in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

“This is something I’ve wanted to do, planned to do, most of my life,? the Martinsville resident explains. “I always liked to recycle the parts from old heating units to see how they work.?

The son of Elvis Spencer and Sheila Mabry, he is a 2007 graduate of Bassett High School. While in high school, he got an opportunity to work part-time at A-Co Heating and Cooling. That experience furthered his interest and he enrolled at DCC in the Fall of 2007. For two years, he made the daily 45 minute commute to the DCC campus, but Spencer says it was worth it.

“DCC has an awesome program, and I feel more than prepared to enter the work world and start my life-long career,? Spencer adds.

During his tenure at DCC, Spencer has been involved in the Soccer Club and frequently earned academic honors by being named to the President’s or Vice President’s Honors Lists. He did all of this while continuing to work part time at A-Co and projects at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church.

“I’ve enjoyed it at DCC. The professors, especially Derrick Vicks, care about students in a personal way to help students succeed. They really encourage us,? Spencer says.

He is really excited about the future. After graduation, he has a full-time job lined up with A-Co Heating and Cooling as a Service Technician, and one day, Spencer says, he hopes to own a Heating and Air Conditioning business.

DCC’s Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program is designed to prepare graduates for employment as air conditioning and refrigeration technicians, sales engineers, installation or service technicians. Two options are available – Diploma which is a more in-depth program and can be completed in two years of full-time study, or three one-year Certificate programs for those interested in servicing equipment or specializing in summer air conditioning or winter air conditioning servicing.
