DANVILLE, VA, February 25, 2009 – Danville Community College’s upcoming “mini-semester? will give residents another chance at starting spring semester classes. More than 50 sections are being offered with most classes starting between March 9 and May 4.

“These late-starting or mini semester classes meet the same number of hours and cover the same amount of material as our regular classes, but they have different beginning and ending dates,? says Dr. Chris Ezell, Vice President of Academic and Student Services.

Ezell notes that these courses are ideal for students who could not enroll at the beginning of the semester in January, for recently laid-off workers, students returning from four-year colleges and others who are seeking to upgrade their skills or learn new ones. A variety of courses are being offered in a number of areas, including administrative support technology, business management , college success skills, cosmetology, electrical/electronics, English/humanities, health care, information technology, job search strategies, marketing, mathematics, religion, safety and speech.

In addition, sports and physical recreation-related classes are being offered such as golf, tennis, soccer, wellness, and beginning motorcycle rider safety. Courses to help with basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics are also available. Ezell says the complete list of courses is available on the DCC web site or by contacting the Admissions Office at 434.797.8467.

“We know this is a particularly difficult time for many residents who may think they cannot afford a higher education,? Ezell explains. “But, there may be options available through our financial aid office or other agencies, such as the Workforce Investment Act or Trade Act. We want to assist residents in updating their skills or learning new skills that can be marketed in workplace.?

Individuals who attend DCC through the Workforce Investment Act or by utilizing Trade Act benefits should check with the Virginia Employment Commission and Workforce Investment Act Office for details on utilizing these funds.
