DANVILLE, VA , December 2, 2009 -- “Today’s Students: Tomorrow’s Leaders? is the name of Danville Community College’s new Student Leadership Program (SLP). Established in October 2009, the program is designed to assist students in developing their leadership skills for personal, college, and current/future career endeavors.

"The goal of the program is to allow new and returning students the opportunities to expand and enhance their leadership knowledge and skills,? said Cathy Pulliam, Assistant Coordinator of Enrollment Management, and one of three program advisors. Other advisors are Jim Lindley, Counselor and Athletic Coordinator, and Alice Walker, Financial Services Specialist. All three advisors are DCC graduates.

Currently, there are 18 students participating in the program. They meet one to two times per month for discussions on a variety of topics, including personality traits, the Virginia legislative processes, leadership styles, ethics and values, and volunteerism. As part of the program the students attend the Virginia Community College System’s annual Student Leadership Conference and the VCCS Legislative days in Richmond during January and February each year.

“Attending college is about more than academics, it is about becoming a well-rounded person, we are hoping that by providing these opportunities to students we are helping them to be better people, better students, better employees, and eventually better managers/supervisors? said Pulliam.
