DANVILLE, VA, April 28, 2009 – It has been more than 30 years in the making, but Danville Community College finally broke ground recently on its new Student Services Center. The facility will be located in the center of the campus, off Kemper Road in front of EIT Building and the Learning Resources Center.

DCC President Dr. Carlyle Ramsey expressed thanks to the community for its generosity in funding the $1.6 million project through the DCC Educational Foundation. He added that the largest single donations - an investment of $725,000 was made by the Danville Kiwanis Foundation and the Danville Lions Foundation. The rest of the funding came from private donations by area residents and organizations.

“This has been a long-awaited dream for the College to provide a student center. This will be something that’s very exciting,? Ramsey says. “We are especially appreciative to the community, the Danville Kiwanis Foundation and the Danville Lions Foundation for their generous contributions.?

With approximately 5,000 square feet of space, plus an additional 1,800 square feet of outdoor covered space (canopy), the facility will house the College’s food services and dining room, lounge area with fireplace and Wi-Fi connectivity, meeting room, and office space. The ground breaking ceremony included remarks from Ramsey, DCC Board Chair Ann Brown, DCC Educational Foundation Board Chair Darren Conner; Landon R. Wyatt Jr., President of the Kiwanis Club of Danville Foundation; and David Clark, President of the Danville Lions Foundation.

Ramsey says the College first began planning for a student center in the 1970s. In the meantime, students have gathered in “day rooms? (converted classrooms) in various buildings on the campus. Ramsey notes receptions after graduation or convocation have been set up under large tents because there was no place on campus for large gatherings.

Ramsey adds that the new facility is scheduled for completion by the beginning of spring semester 2010. The architect for the project is Calloway Johnson Moore & West, while Blair Construction Co. is the contractor.
