The Great Expectations program at Danville Community College offers student support services for education and career planning for youth 17-24 who are or have been in foster care. The Great Expectations Career Coach works with students individually and in small group activities to help them with college academics, job searches, goal setting, and life skills for success. Mentoring services are provided by their academic advisors, coaches, and instructors for additional student success. These services are provided free of charge to those students who qualify and remain active in the program each semester. Students who are high school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to participate in their respective schools. They all can attend the DCC Middle College program (http://www.dcc.vccs.edu/Middle/MiddleCollege.htm) to receive a GED credential and college transitional skills.
Great Expectations students who are enrolled in college can take advantage of provided services for needed items such as books/supplies, bus tokens, tuition, student activities/events, field trips, and specialized tutoring. Great Expectations students have the opportunity to complete a Career Readiness Certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQqNIpsMj3g, career projects, resumes, cover letters, and job applications. Great Expectations students also receive assistance in completing the financial aid process and monetary stipends for completion of all program requirements. These services are in place to help provide college support and transition for future success. All Great Expectations students who have earned a high school diploma, GED credential, college degree/certificate are recognized and honored at the DCC Middle College spring graduation.
