The Scholarship Program at Danville Community College

DCC offers a variety of scholarships for students in many categories.  Please read below for general information, then scroll down to view the links to guidelines and applications for specific scholarships.

  • Applications for the DCC Educational Foundation Scholarships for 2009-2010 must be received by March 16, 2009.  Applicants must have applied for admission to Danville Community College by the scholarship application deadline. Late applications will be kept on file in case additional scholarships become available during the academic year.

  • The Online Application for Admission is also available in print form from your high school counseling office or may be obtained from the DCC Admissions office by calling (434) 797-8467.

  • Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in a curriculum at DCC. (Call the Counseling Office at 
    434-797-8460 and schedule an appointment.).

  • The grade point average and credit hour requirements for each scholarship vary according to the specific guidelines of the individual scholarship.

  • The scholarship must be used in the 2009-2010 academic year and will be disbursed in accordance with the criteria for each individual scholarship.

  • Only one application should be completed to be considered for all scholarships. (All questions must be answered for the applicant to be considered for a scholarship.  Please use complete sentences.)

Scholarships for Freshman Only

 

American National Bank & Trust Company Endowed Scholarship

Full-time student in a two-year program; demonstrates commitment to completing program in a timely manner; does not qualify for other forms of financial aid.

Barkhouser Endowed Scholarship

Full-time, first-year student must reside within the DCC service region or in Caswell County, demonstrates scholastic achievement, has at least a 2.5 high school GPA, and exhibits leadership potential.

 

O.T. Bonner Memorial Academic Award  

 Full-time student at DCC. 

 

Bucknam Scholarship

The recipient must be a resident of Patrick Henry Boys Home, have graduated from high school during the same year in which the first scholarship award is received (current graduate), have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA during high school, and be enrolled full-time in any program at Danville Community College.  If the recipient maintains at least a 2.5 GPA at Danville Community College during the first year, the student will be eligible to receive the Bucknam Scholarship for the second year. 

 

Elizabeth B. Bustard Endowed Scholarship/span>

Full-time student; demonstrates leadership, concern for others, high ideals, good citizenship, and scholastic achievement (3.0 GPA last year in school). 

 

P. Niles and Carol Daly Endowed Scholarship

  • Entering Freshman who is enrolled full-time needing financial assistance

  • Preference to Daly Seven Hotel employees and children of Daly Seven employees  

  • Resides within the local area

  • Must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA

  • Exhibits leadership potential and good citizenship


Stephanie Ferguson Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate of Dan River High School who has maintained at least a 2.5 GPA during high school; enrolled as a first year student in the Child Development, Liberal Arts, or Science program; participated in extracurricular activities during high school and exemplifies leadership within the community; and exhibited great determination with a will to succeed. 

 

Rebecca L. Heldreth Memorial Scholarship

A female senior who is a current year graduate of Chatham High School; achieved a 3.0 GPA, maintained a high moral character, demonstrated concern for others, high ideals, good citizenship, and possesses leadership qualities; participated in community service; demonstrated financial need; and enrolled full-time in transfer Science program of study.

 

  Ethel C. and Henry A. Mitchell Memorial Foundation Scholarship

Demonstrated financial need; maintained at least a 2.5 GPA in high school; performed at least one year of community service either school sponsored or community based; preference will be given to residents of Almagro and surrounding Danville communities.

 

Ann and Frank Mobley Endowed Scholarship

Full-time student; financial need; scholastic achievement (3.0 GPA for last year in high school); academic promise; good citizenship; preference is given to a Tunstall High School student. 

 

Rexford E. O'Neil Endowed Scholarship  

Full-time student enrolled in a two-year program; does not qualify for other forms of financial aid; shows promise of educational success. 

 

Peoples Mutual Telephone Company, Inc. — Tech Prep Scholarship

Full-time or part-time student who is a graduate of the Tech Prep Program and has maintained at least a 2.5 GPA.  Preference for the scholarship will be given to a Gretna High School student or to a student from Pittsylvania County. 

 

Schoolfield High School Reunion Committee Endowed Scholarship

Full-time or part-time as a program-placed student; has maintained a 3.0 GPA in high school; financial need; evidence of involvement in both community and school-related activities.

 

Peyton Sellers Champion Award  

Recipient must be a current high school graduate from Danville, Halifax County or Pittsylvania County, majoring in a technical program, and has academic promise and who possesses and displays leadership potential.

 

Stendig-Miller Endowed Scholarship

Full-time or part-time student enrolled in a program; financial need; strong commitment to acquiring an education. 

 

Jack I. White Endowed Scholarship

Full-time or part-time student; graduate of Dan River High School; financial need; sufficient aptitude and commitment to complete college. 

 

Woodward Academic Award  

Awarded to a high school senior who has overcome obstacles in order to graduate and to obtain a high school diploma.  The recipient must have potential for success in post secondary education and future work; enrolled in any certificate, diploma, or degree program at Danville Community College; and maintain a 2.0 GPA while enrolled at DCC.

 

 

Scholarships for Full-Time Students (Including Freshmen)

 

Alliance One International Endowed Scholarship

The recipient must be a full-time student and remain in good academic and social standing with the college.  Preference will be given to students who are dependents of employees of Alliance One International or its predecessor companies. Second preference will be given to students who are dependents of other local tobacco industry employees. Third preference will be given to students who have lived for at least one year in Danville, Pittsylvania County or the surrounding area.  In instances where multiple candidates meet the eligibility requirements, determination shall be based on a combination of the student's financial need and past academic achievement.

 

Amy Jo Murray Bell Memorial Scholarship

  • Enrolled in the First Year Studies program with plans to complete training in Radiology

  • Maintained at least a 3.0 GPA in high school or in college

  • Preference give to an individual who is a single parent and has participated in community service activities.

Alexander Berkeley Carrington & Ruth Simpson Carrington Charitable Trust Scholarships  

Full-time student; commitment to completing the academic program in a timely manner; financial need. 

 

Chatham Rotary Club Scholarship

Full-time student; resident of Pittsylvania County. 

 

Climate Control, Inc. Endowed Scholarship  

Preference given to children of employees of Climate Control, Inc. and then to Halifax County residents; enrolled full-time in degree, diploma, or certificate program; must maintain a 2.5 GPA and reapply to renew for second year.

 

Dan River Inc. Endowed Scholarship

 The recipient must be a full-time student that demonstrates a clear commitment to completing a degreed program at DCC or in the transfer program. 

 

Excelsis Research Scholarship 

Awards given to a full-time student majoring in Science; enrolled in college-transfer; demonstrates scholastic ability, financial need, and good citizenship.

 

Thelma E. Forney Endowed Scholarship  

Full-time student in any diploma or certificate program or Office Systems Technology. 

 

Walter L. & E. Stuart James Grant Memorial Endowed Scholarship  

Children and immediate family members (defined as living in same household) of Danville Register & Bee employees; enrolled in 12 or more credits; financial need; ability to successfully complete college-level academic requirements.  Recipient must work in the Estelle H. Womack Museum of Natural History for three hours per week.

James R. Meissner, II Memorial Endowed Scholarship  

 Full-time student who is enrolled in the Precision Machining Technologies program and who has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA. 

 

Clyde and Joyce Midkiff Endowed Scholarship  

Full-time student; graduate of Gretna High School; financial need.

 

Vera B. Murphy Memorial / John M. Langston High School Reunion Committee Scholarship

Current high school graduate; full-time student; maintained a 2.5 GPA; reside in Danville, Pittsylvania County, or Halifax County.

 

Shaun William Murray Memorial Scholarship

  • Enrolled in the Liberal Arts Program with plans to major in the fine arts (music, art, or writing) or

  • Enrolled in Graphics Imaging Technology

  • Maintained at least a 3.0 GPA in high school or in college has participated in community service activities

  • Preference given to an individual who lives or has lived in North Danville and attended any one of the following schools: Woodrow Wilson, Taylor or Bonner schools.

               
Kenneth L. Neathery Memorial Endowed Scholarship  

Full-time student in business-related curriculum; does not qualify for other forms of financial aid; shows promise of educational success.

 

Rippe Endowed Scholarship for Women in Science and Business   

Full-time female student enrolled in college transfer and majoring in science or business; demonstrates ability. 

 

Plumer Wiseman Endowed Scholarship  

Full-time student; enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program; 2.5 GPA in the major field.  Recipient must work at the Estelle H. Womack Museum of Natural History three hours per week. 

 

 

Scholarships for Part-Time and Full-Time Students 
 (Including Freshmen)

 

Ahmed Children Scholarship   

Enrolled for self improvement with intention of completing a program/working on plans for a degree, must maintain a 2.5 GPA and financial need.

 

Ashby-Pryor Endowed Scholarship  

Enrolled in at least nine credits.

 

Danville Kiwanis Club Scholarship 

Financial need; scholastic ability; good citizenship. 

 

Danville Lions Foundation, Inc. Endowed Scholarship 

Demonstrate visual, hearing, or other disability. 

 

Davenport Scholarship 

Child of employee of Chatham Oil Company, Banister Bend Farms, Chatham Communications, Davenports, First Piedmont Corporation, or Piedmont Transport; enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program; scholastic achievement; financial need; good citizenship. 

 

DCC Educational Foundation Scholarships   

Awarded to a student in each of the following areas: diploma or certificate, Associate in Applied Science, and Associate in Arts and Science (college transfer).

 

Archer T. Gammon Chapter # 19 Disabled American Veterans/Sgt. Kenneth Gentry Memorial Scholarship  

Two scholarships for Disabled American veterans or their dependents; financial circumstances; good citizenship; strong belief in the American form of government. 

 

Norman D. Haar Endowed Scholarship  

Successfully completed developmental studies requirements; entered chosen curriculum. 

 

Hancock-Murray Sacred Heart Church-School Scholarship  

Sacred Heart Alumnus, member of Sacred Heart Church, or resident of Danville who demonstrates financial need or is no longer supported by parents.

 

Intertape Polymer Group Scholarships  

Five scholarships for the children of employees of Intertape Polymer enrolled in a program; scholastic achievement; financial need; good citizenship.

 

Nathan Lester Excellence Endowed Scholarship    

Goal-directed; motivated young person; demonstrates financial need and excellence in art, music, or the academic arena.

 

Little Life Scholarship

Full or part-time student; female or male student; experience teen pregnancy and wants to continue education. 

 

Mildred H. Smoot McCall/SHS Class of '45 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Maintained at least a 2.5 GPA; program-placed in a transfer program such as Liberal Arts, Science, or Business Administration. 

 

Robert E. Morgan Memorial Endowed Scholarship 

Enrolled in electrical-electronic program, shows potential for successfully completing program. 

 

Lyle Carter Motley, Sr. Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate of Pittsylvania County High School with preference will be given to a graduate of Gretna High School, Chatham High School; enrolled in Electronics; maintained at least a 3.0 GPA during high school or during the first year at DCC.

 

Lawrence Olds Memorial Endowed Scholarship 

Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled at DCC who has demonstrated academic potential and maintained good citizenship. 

 

Peoples Mutual Telephone Endowed Scholarship  

 Employee, spouse, or legal dependent of an employee of Peoples Mutual Telephone. 

 

Shirley Day Primiano Scholarship 

Financial need; good citizenship, scholastic ability.

Project Celebration Scholarship

Established in December 2008, this scholarship will be awarded to a current George Washington High School graduate with financial need entering DCC as a full-time of part-time student.

Robert H. Ramey, Jr. Endowed Scholarship 

This scholarship is available to a student in a degree, certificate or diploma program and must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA prior to the award and during the academic year. Preference will be given to a student who attends any unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs within the city limits of Danville, VA; a minority student, preferably a male; based on financial need.

 

Sandra Lee Riddle/RACO Endowed Honor Scholarship 

Graduate of Gretna High School or has lived within 10 miles of Gretna for five years; preference given to student planning to enter Registered Nursing program or Electronics. 

 

Riverdan Benevolent Fund Endowed Scholarship 

 Employee or son, daughter, or spouse of employee, or of deceased employee of Dan River, Inc. or Riverdan Benevolent Fund, Inc. 

 

Roberts-Hunt Endowed Scholarship 

Resident of South Boston or Halifax County. 

 

James A. Robertson Scholarship

Established in 2002.  The recipient must exhibit financial need.

 

Ruritan National Foundation Scholarship  

In partnership with the Ruritan Nations Foundation, the DCC Educational Foundation, Inc. offers one matching scholarship to a recipient of the Ruritan National Foundation Scholarship, who lives within the DCC service region of the City of Danville and the Counties of Halifax and Pittsylvania. 

 

Wendell O. Scott Memorial Academic Award  

Student must be enrolled in the automotive/auto body program or a related technical program, has maintained a 2.5 GPA, and has athletic potential. 

 

Obra E. and Shirley J. Spangler Endowed Scholarship  

Student must be enrolled in the Graphics Imaging program; have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA, and demonstrated good citizenship through community involvement. 

 

Christopher Daniel Turner Memorial Scholarship 

Member of the Law Enforcement Explorer in Post 911 for at least 6 months; financial need; 2.6 GPA

 

U. S. Military Vets M/C Patriotic Scholarship  

The scholarship will be awarded to a veteran, spouse. Or child of a veteran with an Honorable, General, or Medical Discharge or Certificate of completion or ROTC from high school and have 12 or more credit hours at DCC. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better and complete a 500 word essay on a patriotic theme determined by USMV M/C.

 

Melvin C. and Jean Harper Vernon Scholarship 

Music or art background; experience in sacred music performance; resides in service area; intends to complete 4-year degree. 

 

Whittle Family Endowed Scholarship 

Need; scholastic ability; good citizenship. 

 

Garland M. Wyatt Endowed Scholarship 

Enrolled in business-related curriculum; financial need.

 

L. Wilson York Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Academic promise regardless of financial resources.

 

 

Scholarships for Sophomores Only!

 

Corning Incorporated Endowed Scholarship     

Rising sophomore; enrolled full-time in Electronics, Computer Information Systems, or Accounting; demonstrates academic excellence. 

 

Robert and Jim Dunaway Scholarship 

1) Recipient must be a second-year student enrolled in a business transfer program (focusing on accounting) who has maintained a 3.0 GPA and plans to transfer to a four-year institution with preference given to a student planning to attend Virginia Tech.

2) Recipient must be a second-year student enrolled in the Administration of Justice program who has maintained a 3.0 GPA.  Preference will be given to a student or an immediate family member who is employed by the Pittsylvania County Sheriff Department.

 

Roy and Joan Gignac Endowed Scholarship   

Rising sophomore; full-time student; resident of Danville or Pittsylvania County; has sibling enrolled as full-time student at a college; commitment to complete program; good citizenship; at least 2.8 GPA; preference given to student in Electronics.

 

Graphics Imaging Excellence Scholarship  

Recipient must be enrolled as a second-year student in Graphics Imaging Technology, has financial need, has maintained at least a 2.5 GPA, and exhibits academic promise in the printing field.  An award is given in both fall and spring semesters. 

 

Thelma Swann Johnson Memorial Endowed Scholarship  

Recipient must be enrolled as a second-year student who has maintained a 3.00 or better GPA and has enrolled full-time in a two-year program. The recipient must have participated in multiple activities during the first year at DCC exemplified leadership within the community and at the College, and exhibited great determination and will to succeed.  

 

Fred Lloyd III Memorial Scholarship  

Recipient must be enrolled full-time in a transfer program (Liberal Arts, Science, or Business Administration). The recipient must have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA and exhibited good citizenship, character, and sound values that have been demonstrated through leadership and civic involvement. 

 

Virginia Bank and Trust Scholarship  

Rising sophomore; completed 30 semester hours; plans to enroll for 12 or more credits; 2.75 GPA or above; resides in Danville/Pittsylvania County area within 30 miles of Bank's main office; enrolled in business-related curriculum; special consideration given to students in Business Management or Marketing. 

 

Wilkins & Co. Realtors Scholarship 

Rising sophomore; majoring in Marketing; demonstrates scholastic ability; maintained a  2.5 GPA; good leadership potential. 

 

Wyatt-Benton Endowed Scholarship 

Rising sophomore; based on need; scholarship; good citizenship.
