Course Number and Title: English 241, Survey of American Literature I

I. Catalog Description: Examines American literary works from Colonial times to the middle of the 19th century, emphasizing the ideas and characteristics of our national literature. Involves critical reading and writing.


II. Relationship of the Course to Curricula Objectives in which it is Taught:

Students successfully completing this course will demonstrate the ability to read, think, and write critically, to participate in literary discussions, to listen objectively and respond to classmates, and to develop a cultural and historical perspective.


III. Required Background: English 112 or departmental approval.


IV.          Course Content:

Surveys major periods and movements of American Literature and the major writers belonging to each. Includes a thorough historical, philosophical and cultural perspective as represented by the following authors.


Topics include significant works of major authors in American Literature. Examples of these authors and works include:


1.    The Literature of Colonial America Anne Bradstreet, Edward Taylor

2.    The Age of Reason Franklin, Paine, Jefferson, Wheatley, and Freneau

3.    Romanticism Poe, Hawthorne, Meliske, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Holmes, Dickinson.

The student will:


A.   Recognize the major American writers and their writing styles, subjects, and themes.

B.   Trace the major literary periods and philosophies

C.   Read, think, and write critically about literature

D.   Appreciate the aesthetics of good writing

Students must complete at least one major academic paper. Students will also be assessed using some combination of tests, quizzes, additional writing assignments, and projects as defined by faculty.


All written assignments will be assessed for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and consistency according to the conventions of standard English.
