Course Number and Title:           ENG 211-212, Creative Writing I - II

I.              Catalog Description:         Introduces the student to the fundamentals of writing imaginatively. Students write in forms to be selected from poetry, fiction, drama, and essays. Prerequisite ENG 112 or divisional approval. Lecture 3 hours per week.


II.            Relationship of the course to curricula objectives in which it is taught: 


This course counts as a fine arts or humanities requirement in the liberal arts programs.  It also meets general elective requirements in other transfer degree programs.


III.           Required background: 


ENG 111 and ENG 112.  ENG 212 requires ENG 211 as a prerequisite.

1.            Poetry

2.            Drama

3.            The Short Story

4.            The Novel

The student will:

A.   Understand the forms and styles of writing as art forms

B.   Be able to imaginatively express themselves in a form of creative writing

C.   Be able to critique forms of creative writing

D.   Learn to critique and revise one’s own works

Students will pursue creative writing projects as assigned by the faculty.


All written assignments will be assessed for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and consistency according to the conventions of standard English.
