Course Number and Title: BIO 231, Human Anatomy and Physiology I

I. Catalog Description: Integrates the study of gross and microscopic anatomy with physiology, emphasizing the analysis and interpretation of physiological data. Prerequisites one year of college biology and one year of college chemistry or divisional approval. Lecture 3 hours. Recitation and laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.
II. Relationship of the course to curricula objectives in which it is taught:
It supports an understanding of the natural world through the methodology of science and thus supports the development of the critically reflective student and citizen. This is a transfer level natural science course which meets natural science requirements in transfer degree programs and liberal arts elective course requirements.
III. Required background:
Non developmental in reading and writing
MTH 03 (or through MTE 5) completion or competence; Biology 101-102, Chemistry 111-112, or Divisional Approval
IV. Course Content:
1. The structure and orientation of the human body
2. Organization, development, and function of the different body tissues
3. A comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the following body systems:
a. Integumentary System
b. Skeletal System
c. Muscular System
d. Nervous System
e. Autonomic Nervous System
f. Circulatory System
V. Learner Outcomes
The student will:
A. Know and understand basic principles and concepts of human anatomy and physiological covered in the course content.
B. Be able to identify body structures and functions.
C. Be able to use scientific equipment such as microscopes to identify different types of human tissues, be able to identify skeletal and muscular components of the human body in greater depth than the 141-142 sequence.
All students are required to complete lab practicals, using microscopes, specimens, and models.
All students will complete lab practicals which involve dissection of selected organisms.
