University of Virginia

1)    How would you describe your campus to transfer students?

Welcoming, warm, and helpful. UVA is a midsized (13,000 students) public, research university located in the beautiful college town of Charlottesville.  66% of our students come from Virginia.  We accept transfer students in six undergraduate schools and offer majors in over 50 departments.  85% of the courses at UVA have fewer than 50 students and only 7% have over 100.  We are very interested in enrolling good students from all Virginia Community Colleges.  We hope that half of the approximately 500 transfer students we enroll each year will come from a Virginia Community College.  Students who come from a VCCS school to UVA graduate in two years with a gpa that is almost identical to those who started as first year students.

2)     What F.A.Q.s do you most frequently need to answer from transfer students and how do you respond?

What courses should I take?

We suggest they visit our website and to contact us if they have any questions. Sticking with introductory courses across a liberal arts curriculum is the best bet. We like courses in English, social sciences, humanities, math, science, and foreign language.

Is housing guaranteed?

Yes, for the first year at UVA.

Can I be considered for multiple undergraduate schools at UVA?

Yes, if you are applying to a preprofessional school (engineering, architecture, commerce/business, education) and are not admitted we will consider you for a spot in the College if you indicate you would be interested in this in your application.

Is the guarantee agreement for fall only?

Yes, at this point (fall 2006) it is only for the fall and only for the College of Arts and Sciences.  Students need a 3.4 gpa and their associate's degree.  You can find other specifics on our website.

Will I get an advisor once I enroll?

Yes, your advisor will help you plan your courses and help you with registration.

Is there a separate transfer orientation?

Yes.   Also, you will be assigned a Transfer Peer Advisor who is a student who transferred to UVA previously.  This student will help you with everything you need as you start your career at UVA.

3)      What financial aid opportunities exist for transfer students and what institutional deadlines need to be met in order to qualify?

We meet 100% of financial need and waive loan and work for needy students.

4)      What are the important deadlines for transfer students?

Nov. 1 for January admission, March 1 for August.

5)      What links would you like posted from your web site that would take students to information and important contacts for transfer
         students?
