Educational Objectives and Core Competencies

Master Syllabi identify essential  content which students should expect to cover in a particular class.  Faculty who teach courses represented by the master syllabi are required to cover identified content topics utilizing their professional judgment on how to best present these issues to students.  In addition, master syllabi identify SCHEV competencies and DCC educational objectives which are supported by that course.  Identification of supported competencies and objectives notifies the instructor that class assignments and assessment of student performance should be designed to promote development of skills relevant to them as well as promote mastery of specific content topics.

Hence, specific class outlines for a course are expected to identify how assignments required of students promote or support these competencies and objectives.  Students should expect to be assessed by instructors on their successful mastery of these skills as well as mastery of course content.

Core Competencies and DCC's Educational Objectives

  1. SCHEV Core Competencies and DCC's Educational Objectives specify general education outcomes essential for the educated citizen.  DCC expects students in all of its certificate, diploma and degree programs to develop skills specified in its objectives.  The faculty of the Arts and Sciences Division recognizes that achievement of the skills and competencies associated with the educated citizen is secured in each classroom through the work of students dedicated to the completion of assignments designed to promote content and skill mastery.

Writing - Students will be able to develop and express complex ideas clearly, coherently and logically in a style appropriate for both purpose and audience.  Students will master accepted standards of written communication.  
Communication

1.  Students will read critically, write in an organized manner, listen objectively, and speak effectively.

 

     
Oral Communication - Students will develop the ability to deliver a spoken message of significant depth and complexity in a way that elicits an immediate response from an audience of understanding, appreciation, assent, or critical inquiry.  Students will be able to effectively organize ideas, use clear and vivid language and develop appropriate and sustained engagement with an audience.    

Learning Skills
2.   Students will recognize the need for lifelong learning. 
3.  Students will demonstrate skills to locate and utilize information resources. 
4.  Students will draw from knowledge of appropriate disciplines, identify problems, analyze alternate solutions, and make decisions.
 

 

     
Critical Thinking - Students will be able to analyze arguments for relevance and strength, assess evidence, and identify unstated assumptions.  Students will understand how to make reasonable inferences from information, data, and premises.

5Students will develop critical thinking skills including analysis, evaluation, synthesis, and reflection. 
6.  Students will demonstrate the ability to function in an independent, self-directed manner.
     
Quantitative Reasoning - Students will be able to use numerical, algebraic, geometric, and measurement concepts and principles to solve quantitative problems.
 
 
Interpersonal Skills and Human Relations
7.  Students will recognize effective interpersonal skills. 
8.  Students will recognize the need for value judgments and will display a concern for ethics and social responsibility.
     
Information Literacy - Students will be able to identify the nature and extent of information needed for a particular purpose, access relevant information, assess the reliability of information, and critically evaluate and select information.  Students will be aware of the ethical and legal restraints on appropriate information use.  
Computational and Computer Skills

9.  Students will utilize mathematical procedures for effective performance on the job and in society. 
10.  Students will be able to use appropriate computer technology.

 
     
Scientific Reasoning - Students will understand the scientific method, including the reliance of science on empirical data, how scientific theories and hypotheses are constructed, and the role of experiment in verifying and falsifying hypotheses.  Students will be able to distinguish between scientific and non-scientific arguments and be able to reason by deduction, induction, and analogy, as well as distinguish causal from correlational relationships.  
Understanding Culture and Society

11.  Students will recognize the value of democratic institutions. 
12.  Students will recognize the existence of different perspectives and cultural values. 
13.  Students will recognize the function and impact of major social, cultural, economic, and political institutions. 
14.  Students will develop an historical consciousness and a global perspective.
 
   
Understanding Science and Technology
15.  Students will know and understand the major developments in science and technology in relationship to their field of study, and will evaluate their impact on contemporary society and on the environment.

Wellness
16.  Students will recognize behaviors that promote physical and emotional well-being.
