Travels

Dr. Ramsey will attend the Phi Theta Kappa picnic on Saturday, May 3, at Dan Daniel Park.

On May 5-6, Dr. Ramsey will travel to San Antonio to attend the National Association of Business Incubators convention.

On May 12, Dr. Ramsey will attend a meeting of the DCC Educational Foundation Board at 12 Noon in the Wyatt Board Room.

Dr. Ramsey will attend the DCC Baseball Banquet on May 12 in Oliver Hall.

Dr. Ramsey will attend a meeting of the IDA Board at 8 a.m. on May 16.

Dr. Ramsey will serve on a panel for a meeting of Lead Virginia on May 17 at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.

On May 19, Dr. Ramsey will travel to Richmond to attend the meeting of the Advisory Council of Presidents and GPAC.

Dr. Ramsey will give opening remarks at the Apprenticeship graduation on May 22 at 6 p.m. in Oliver Hall.

 

Cathy Barrett and Tammy McKinney attended the Simulation User Network conference April 29-30 in Charlotte, NC.

 
Janet Lauglin, Laura Powell, Jim Sutherland, Kathleen Morrison, and Gail Neal presented at the New Horizons Conference.  The topic was concerning modular instruction, "What Works and What Doesn't Work."
 
Cathy Conner attended the MEAEOPP (Mid Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel) 32nd Annual Conference at Virginia Beach March 30 - April 2, 2008.  The theme was "Raising the Banner of Success:  MEAEOPP, TRiO and You."


For Your Information

The Title III group sponsored a Math Summit with Dr. Paul Nolting on April 18, 2008.  Teachers and instructors from the city and county schools as well as DCC instructors attended.
 
Dr. Hunter Boylan, the outside consultant for the Title III program, was on campus Friday, April 25.  He observed class instruction and met with the staff.

DCC Upward Bound Program participants and staff met with George Washington High School Guidance Counselors Carolyn Funderburk and Mary Braswell (Langston campus) and DCC Counselor Debbie Roberts on Saturday, April 19th in Oliver Hall to hold a Counselor's Roundtable on college planning and preparation while in high school. The meeting also included Danville Police Officer Baker, from Danville Crime Prevention Unit, to discuss Gang Violence and Awareness.

Title III is having its ‘summer institute’ May 13, 14, 15.  
  • May 13th, Dr. Don Finn will discuss universal design at RCATT from 10:00 – 3:00.  Reservations can be made by contacting Laura Powell or Gail Neal.
  • May 14th Patricia Parker, RCC, will present to the Title III math faculty on “math on 4 wheels.”     Amy Abbott will present on Blackboard use.
  • May 15th  Jim Sutherland will present  a session on math study skills.

Week of the Young Child was celebrated April 14-18 at DCC. Students and children from Families First Children's Center entertained over 400 additional community children during this week. Thanks to so many of you who stopped to chat with the little ones!

Congratulations!

Sandi Satterfield has finished her Master's Degree.  She is graduating this May 3rd with a Master of Science with a concentration in Information Technology from Radford University.

Baseball coach John Bailey recorded his 200th victory at DCC on Saturday, April 26th.  This feat was done in 7 seasons and figures to 28.6 wins per season.

On Saturday, May 10th, Lauren Horne will graduate from Lynchburg College with her M.Ed. in Counselor Education.
 
Bonnie Cooley will graduate May 10, 2008 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with two Post-master's certificates; one as a Family Nurse Practitioner and one as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner.  Please congratulate her on this great accomplishment!!

Cathy Pulliam received a professional certificate in enrollment management from Noel-Levitz in April.  Also, her husband and daughter (Hal and Hallie) as they rode in the Heritage Day Tractor Parade in South Boston on Saturday, April 26.  She sent us a photo:

Patricia White is the proud grandmother of Madison Dale, born on April 22 in South Boston.  She weighed 7 lbs 12 oz and is 20 inches long. Patricia has sent us this adorable picture to enjoy:

Gifts and Remembrances

Flowers were sent to the funeral of Ms. Ruth T. Bishop, Gail Neal’s mother, in Atlanta, Georgia, who died after an extended illness. 

A get-well card was mailed to Ms. Carole McClanahan who had an appendectomy.  Ms. McClanahan is a DCC retiree as well as an adjunct instructor.
 
A get-well card was mailed to Mr. Pete Castiglione following one-day surgery at Danville Regional Medical Center.
 
Flowers were sent to Mr. Wayne Martin, who was a patient at Danville Regional Medical Center.
 
A get-well card was mailed to Ms. Ruth Green, who is recuperating at home following surgery in Chapel Hill.  Ruth is an adjunct instructor for Workforce Services.
 
A donation was made to the DCC Educational Foundation in memory of Mrs. Marguerite Thomas Motley, who was Mary Gail Easley’s mother. 

A donation was made to the Danville Humane Society in memory of Mr. Lester Mack,  the father-in-law of Dee Drinkard.  Mr. Mack died Friday, and funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida.
